The earliest mentions of Swołowo come from the 13^th Century. At that time, it was granted to the Knights of St. John, who resided in the nearby Sławno. It remained under the “knights in habits” for almost two hundred years. It was formed in an ellipse encompassing the stream flowing down the middle and to the pond, which was a method characteristic of the area and popular a thousand years ago. The central plot of the village, also oval, is home to a small church, originally built by the Knights of St. John and still presenting traces of its oldest gothic shape. Its shape of today brings to mind the churches in Denmark and southern Sweden.

The village is located in a small valley, the centre of which overlaps the central square, and the banks of which slightly riseas the further they get from the church. The original development is dominated by “checker houses” – residential and utility buildings with black-beam construction and white infills. Several such buildings, over one hundred years old. in various states of preservation, make Swołowo considered as the capital of the “checker land” – an area with the characteristic developments. One of the Swołowo farmsteads, which used to be owned by a farmer named Albrecht, is currently a department of the Museum of Central Pomerania in Słupsk. The employees of the Museum renovate not only the buildings and their equipment, but also work on the cohesive concept of preserving the unusual form of all of Swołowo and its developments, most of which are under private ownership.

The village of Swołowo, which carries the proud title of “European Village of Cultural Heritage”, is a place worth visiting, not only due to its special historical values, but mainly the exceptional beauty of the village itself and its nearest surroundings.
