Already in his early days his fascination with art was so intense that when he reached the required age, Jan started to attend the Art School in Gdańsk, and, later on, developed his skills at higher-education institutions in Dresden, Berlin, and Munich. Many years of education produced amazing paintings depicting Gdańsk monuments. It is his works that helped to reconstruct many historical buildings after military operations ceased in 1945. Schultz was the founder of the Gdańsk Art Friends’ Society, and he stood up against the removal of perrons, the demolition of historic establishments and the redevelopment of interiors. This outstanding artist died in his house on Piwna Street on 16 June 1873.
