The legend goes that the statue of Mary was once placed by the well on the bay in Swarzewo, by Dutch sailors, who, with their prayers, were saved from a dangerous storm. Due to the fact that there was no church in the village at that time, the statue was transported to the church in Hel. Later on, when the Reformation came and the majority of Catholics converted to Protestantism, the people of Hel threw the figure into the sea. However, it miraculously returned to its previous place in Swarzewo, and has been an object of cult in Kashubia ever since. On the shore, where it was found, a chapel was built with a miraculous spring.
Currently, in the third church in Swarzewo, the statue is placed in the main altar, but is revealed only on special occasions. The church itself, dating back to the year 1880, is one of the most interesting examples of Neo-Gothic in Pomerania. It has a rich interior, mainly Neo-Gothic, with beautiful altars (the main and side altars),and polychrome staining. There is also a very interesting painting, a map from 1684, depicting the Hel Peninsula with its environs and an illustration of the trail of the miraculous statue before it arrived in Swarzewo.
The church fairs in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Swarzewo, Queen of the Polish Sea, take place twice a year, in July and September. Apart from the church in Swarzewo, there is also a small fishermen’s heritage parko n the bay. Nearby is a buoy bridge. The entire area is quite beautiful, with its view of the bay, Puck and Hel Peninsula.
