The Kashubian Museum in Kartuzy

Franciszek Treder was born in 1903 in Łączyńska Huta near Kartuzy and died in 1980 in Gdynia. Prior to World War II, the district authorities of Kartuzy considered the creation of the Kashubian Museum. However, the outbreak of World War II put a stop to those plans. In the successive gathering of exhibitions, Treder was assisted by Franciszka Majkowska, lawyer Wiktor Hirsch, Dr. Henryk Kotowski, Robert Komkowski, Aleksander Arendt, Feliks Marszałkowski and others. In 1947, they founded the Kashubian Museum Enthusiasts Association, named after Dr. Aleksander Majkowski, in Kartuzy. The home of the Kashubian Museum is the post-German building evacuated by the Public Security Office. It is the home of the Kashubian Museum to this day. The official opening of the Kashubian Museum took place on 1 May 1947. The Kashubian Museum was nationalised on 1 January 1950, and the association was closed. Treder was nominated as the manager and employee of the Museum. To the tourists and inhabitants of Kashubia, he has become a legend and student of the Kashubia land.

The ground floor hosts exhibitions associated with fishing, agriculture, household equipment and pottery. The upper floor is home to elements of Kashubian culture and rituals, objects of folk art, the contents of a dowry box and the Kashubian Chamber.
