At that time it ranked among the longest bridges of the world (837 metres long). Its construction consumed 4 million thalers. The cornerstone for its construction was laid by Frederick William IV. The bridge initially had ten towers and two entrance gates with beautiful portals – only the four towers have survived. Its current length is 1052 metres. The American Society of Civil Engineers listed the bridge in Tczew as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark (e.g. the Eiffel Tower in Paris is included in the same list).
The second, railway, bridge was built between 1888 and 1890. Both bridges leveraged all the possible technological and engineering solutions used in 19th-Century bridge construction.
