It was erected between 1599 and 1602 according to the design by Anthonis van Obberghen to serve Protestant clergymen. Its characteristic facade in the Mannerist style was divided into three identical parts, which makes it look like three separate tenements. A similar solution was adopted by the master van Obberghen in designing the facades of the Great Armoury and the Green Gate. Below the Dutch tops of the tenement houses there is an inscription from the Psalms reading: “Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles”. The Preachers’ House can be regarded among the most appealing embodiments of the Dutch Mannerism in the residential architecture of Gdańsk.
