This was initially a department store and cloth storehouse, which was frequented by English merchants. From the 18th Century, it was a hotel, also well liked by the English. This is probably where the name of the tenement came from, although it was also referred to as the House of Angels, perhaps from the statue of an angel on the peak. The mystery of the name remains unresolved. During World War II, the building was seriously damaged. Only a small part of the once richly-decorated and colourful facade survived. Following its reconstruction in 1979, it serves as the home of the Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts.
