Pleistocene ice-rafted deposits transported by the continental glacier were extracted here. The mine was probably active from the 18^th century until the early 20^th century, although some researchers claim that its beginnings date back as far as the 10^th century. Characteristic pits in the form of craters are still extant here, and the largest of them is 40 m in diameter and 15 m deep.

The reserve can be reached along a marked path from the car park in Bąkowo, which is located next to route 221 Gdańsk-Kolbudy-Kościerzyna.

Similar remains of amber extraction sites can be found in the forest between Sopot and Karwiny in Gdynia.
