Pleistocene ice-rafted deposits transported by the continental glacier were extracted here. The mine was probably active from the 18th century until the early 20th century, although some researchers claim that its beginnings date back as far as the 10th century. Characteristic pits in the form of craters are still extant here, and the largest of them is 40 m in diameter and 15 m deep.
The reserve can be reached along a marked path from the car park in Bąkowo, which is located next to route 221 Gdańsk-Kolbudy-Kościerzyna.
Similar remains of amber extraction sites can be found in the forest between Sopot and Karwiny in Gdynia.
