But the Brewery in Bielkówko is more than just beer. It is also an important part of the history of Gdańsk Pomerania. The name Amber itself refers to the symbol of Gdańsk. The establishment also continues the rich brewing traditions of the town. The names of beer brands and etiquettes on bottles are directly connected with figures associated with our region, e.g. Remus is a well-known Kashubian wanderer.
The Amber Brewery is also a traditional September festival of dark beer “Kożlaki”. Each year it is an excellent occasion to see and taste Kashubian products made by local companies.
The history of the place started in 1990 with a small beer-bottling plant. Three years later its owner, Mr Andrzej Przybyło, decided to build a brewery. It was not to be your usual run-of-the-mill brewery, though. From the very start Mr Przybyło had a clearly-defined goal – to create the highest-quality beer. Thus, he gave birth to the popularity of traditional brewing methods in Poland. To this day all beer brands from Bielkówko are based on the “Reinheitsgebot” edict issued in 1516 by William the Duke of Bavaria. He commanded that the production use exclusively three natural ingredients: water, barley malt, and yeast: “zu keinem Bier mehr Stücke als allein Gersten, Hopfen und Wasser verwendet und gebraucht werden sollen.” (“more beer ingredients than barley, hops and water should never be used.”) The only innovation is the addition of hops, the qualities of which were discovered after the edict was issued. In contrast to the big breweries, no enhancers or preservatives are used in the Amber Brewery, and the safety and quality of the product is ensured by state-of-the-art devices. A great asset is represented by the brewery’s own water intake and yeast propagation station. Beer matures for a long time, at least a month, and some brands mature even longer. Such a careful production process results in a remarkable achievement – each brew from Amber has nearly identical parameters and flavour. Because of this, our regional beer is already recognised all over the world.
