The castle in Gniew, built at the turn of the 14th Century, was the seat of the convent and Komtur under Teutonic rule, and under Poland was the seat of starosts. The vicissitudes of fortune were not merciful for the structure in later centuries. It served as a granary and a prison, and was not delivered from the great fire of the town that happened in the early 20th Century. Still, thanks to the good will of people, the castle stood from its knees and is now a great attraction for tourists who come to Gniew. You can encounter the ghost of a mediaeval knight here and come into contact with vibrant, living history of the place. It hosts various performances and knights’ tournaments, as well as historic stagings, of which Vivat Vasa is the most famous. The battle staging depicts the clash of Zygmunt III Vasa and Gustav II Adolf during the Prussian War.
